Description

This seat is the APEX (Advanced Protection & Extraction) prototype for the joint venture project between Lear, Jaguar Racing and The Federation Internationale de I' Automobile (FIA), introduced in late 1998 for Formula One Race Cars.  Since this is a prototype model not intended to be installed in the vehicle, the chrome dials on the lower sides of the chair do not actually operate although they do turn (would normally release from the car).   The extractable seat has a duel-shell construction; there is the common carbon fiber outer shell that can fit in all F1 cockpits;  there is a kevlar / carbon inner shell that is custom formed for the drivers physique.  The space between is filled with an energy absorbing material.  The seat is suede with leather trim.  The Jaguar Racing Symbol is embroidered into the frotn face of the headrest in a dark silver thread.

Jaguar Racing was a Formula One team that competed in the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2000 to 2004. It was formed from the purchase by Ford of Jackie Stewart's Stewart Grand Prix Formula One team in June 1999. Ford renamed the team Jaguar Racing as part of its global marketing operations to promote their Jaguar premium car company. However, during the years of Ford's ownership, the team was unable to revive its performances of 1999.

The team in 2000 was managed by Wolfgang Reitzle, who was then head of Ford's Premier Automotive Group. The extra funding and publicity brought by becoming Ford's own team were obvious from the first race of the year. The team hired 1999 world championship runner up Eddie Irvine to partner former Stewart driver Johnny Herbert in an all UK team. Unfortunately this did not guarantee further success. The results that season did not match the results that Steward had been able to achieve in 1999. Reitzle stepped down and was replaced by American Racing champion and successful team owner Bobby Rahal for 2001.
Here is the original press release in 2000 regarding this seat

Jaguar Racing and Lear Develop Extractable F1 Seat Chassis

MAGNY COURS, France, Jun 30, 2000 - Jaguar Racing, in cooperation with the team's Technology Partner, Lear Corporation (NYSE: LEA), today presented to the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) a new lightweight Jaguar R1 chassis equipped with a Formula One extractable seat system for use in training sessions for Grand Prix race track marshals.

The new Jaguar R1 training chassis, debuting at the French Grand Prix, will be shipped to subsequent Grand Prix races to train marshals for potential driver extrication. The award-winning extractable seat system was a collaboration between technical and design engineers at Lear, Jaguar Racing (formerly Stewart Grand Prix) and the FIA. The FIA's Technical Working Group adopted the technical specifications from the prototype seat designed and developed by Lear and Jaguar Racing in conjunction with Professor Sid Watkins, the FIA Medical Commission Chairman, and Charlie Whiting, the FIA Safety Delegate. This type of extractable seat became mandatory on all Formula One cars from January 1, 1999.

The seat is designed for rapid extrication of an injured driver (30% faster than conventional methods), to prevent further injury and to provide better stabilization. Track marshals are trained to apply the extractable seat system's head stabilization board, attach the belts and lift the immobilized driver from his car without causing further injury. Fortunately, the extractable seat has not been put to the test during the 1999 or 2000 Grand Prix seasons, but each driver now uses a version of the seat made in accordance with Lear-Jaguar Racing design specifications.

The extractable seat system has earned several important safety awards. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) presented Lear and Jaguar Racing with its prestigious 1998 Motorsports Engineering Safety Award for "outstanding contribution to state-of-the-art motorsports engineering."

Automotive and Transportation Interiors Magazine also awarded the extractable seat with top prize in the magazine's 1999 Interior Design and Technology Awards' Production Division/Safety Category. One judge called it "a truly innovative design and engineering solution with easily measurable gains in safety." Another said, "This concept is particularly commendable because any translation to production vehicles means extending the seat's safety responsibilities still further, beyond current work with whiplash protection."

In addition to its work with the extractable seat, Lear also worked integrally with Jaguar Racing to develop the Formula One drivers' seats entirely using computer-aided design. Lear designers use highly specialized modeling and software to help determine the optimum position to enhance driver comfort, which can have a major impact on driver performance. Lear also has helped the team focus on vehicle packaging, driver anthropometry (the study of human measurements) and custom seat design. The new design converted the uncomfortable, old foam seat to new, carbon fiber/kevlar composite structural sheet supplemented with individualized foam inserts to enhance driver comfort and support. The new seat structure also is lighter, an important factor in racing.

In the continuing pursuit of improved safety in motorsports, Lear's engineers have been furthering the art of seating and cockpit safety systems including a new innovative extractable system to be shown at the US Grand Prix in September of this year. This area represents another opportunity for Lear to make major contributions to Formula One and motorsports safety, and also to develop safety applications that will transfer from the racetrack to the roadways.

Each chair we build is unique, amd your purchase includes a custom base in a matching polished aluminum.

The mechanics of the bases are a Synchro knee-tilter from Global.  This has a full metal aluminum polished base and frame with a sculpted silhouette.   The smooth synchronous tilting action maintains constant contact and support for your body in all postures.  There are sculpted shift levers at the side of the seat to control the synchro tilt mechanism and seat height.  The rotating pivot arms are height adjustable.

Racechairs come from actual exotic sports cars and racecars.  We find late model race conversions and parts cars and acquire the seats from around the world.  Once we receive a new seat, it is disassembled, the leather is cleaned and conditioned, the unnecessary hardware is removed and a custom bracket is created to place the seat in the optimal position.

SEAT CONDITION =  10/10

Because Leather has natural markings, and these seats do come from a pre-owned vehicle, some wear on the seat is to be expected.  We have implemented a rating system to mmore accurately describe each chairs condition.
NEW:

removed from car at dealer/shop before any use (common for race conversions)

10/10:

may have been used for a brief period of time, no wear marks or defects, still looks "new"

9.5/10:

may have a small scratch in leather surface at a non central location.  Common from bumping the back or side during removal from the vehicle.  many times the seats are such a tight factory fit that the base slides along the carpet and can scratch the leather surface
9/10:

may have a small scratch in the leather in a more central location (seat base, back or headrest)

8.5/10:

some breaking in of the leather surface, may have some discoloration in threads (common for brightly colored threads), or more prominent scratches

8/10:

more pronounced breaking in of leather surface including some minor stretching of leather in high traffic areas

<8/10:

see individual notes.  Most of these are from the motorsports memoribilia collection and considered collectors items or very limited edition pieces based on production history and ownership history
